Sage Tidbit #8: Watermeloning!

A tidbit is a small morsel…. of inspiration, insights, or lessons learned/tips to reflect on, and digest, over your week.

The other day, I asked my stepson to cut a watermelon to help with preparing dinner. It was a large watermelon and he was overwhelmed by the task – not sure he could safely do it without cutting himself, and he didn’t know how to “properly” cut a watermelon.

 
 

He wouldn’t cut it. So, I took a kitchen knife and cut halfway through the watermelon. And said, “There you can finish it.” He cut it in half and then said, “I don’t know the right way to cut the watermelon. I don’t want to do it wrong.” I said, “There is no right way to cut a watermelon…. You could cut it in slices or wedges – anyway that gives us pieces we can grab and eat.”

He figured out different ways to cut it and keep a safe grip on the watermelon without getting injured. We discussed what he learned in the process that can be applied to a life lesson and other challenges. What is a watermelon in your life and how do you “watermelon” through it? Think of it as an active verb – watermeloning!

  • What is your watermelon (a challenge or situation that seems overwhelming)?

  • How and when do you ask for the appropriate help or support?

  • How do you break this challenge up into bite-size pieces that make it more manageable?

  • How do you come up with creative strategies and solutions that can help you navigate your way through it?
