Follow-up Friday: What is One Thing You Can Do To Keep Our Country Safer?
I thought about this a lot this week… and then there was another college shooting this morning in Arizona. Wow. When will it end?
When we have done something about it.
Here is what I did: I contacted a woman at my church who has been working toward passing safer gun laws since Sandy Hook (we live 10 minutes from there). I asked how I could get involved in this taskforce. I circulated my concerns on facebook. It is interesting to me how many people don’t want the government regulating their guns which they have to keep themselves “safer.” And yet no one would agree to having people be able to buy a car without any training, any insurance or any safety measures.
Here is the letter that I sent both my Congresswoman Elizabeth Etsy, and Senator Chris Murphy today:
Please work toward passing safe gun legislation as soon as possible.
One of my friends, Lisa Infante, was murdered in her home by her husband two weeks ago - shot to death with her children present. Then he took off.
Then we have college shootings last week and again today in Arizona. How many more innocent people need to die at the hands of someone not willing to work out their problems another way?
Please consider best practices from other countries that have much lower rates of killing rate by guns than we do (i.e., Israel).
Here is what I would like to see:
Title and tag each gun
Require gun training and written test
Require a practical test
Health requirements
Liability insurance on each gun
Renewal and inspections at intervals
Make civilian use and ownership of warfare weapons illegal - they are meant for war!
Thank you for your hard work and dedication to this cause.
Sincerely,
Susan Shaner
