Sage Tidbit #5: Striving & Accepting What Is
A tidbit is a small morsel…. of inspiration, insights, or lessons learned/tips to reflect on, and digest, over your week.
What is the balance point of striving and push yourself and your team to achieve your goals and accepting what is, that maybe it’s not meant to be – you are not meant to achieve that goal?
I work with many ambitious people who drive themselves and others to achieve challenging goals. Sometimes the drive and perseverance IS just what the team needs – to believe they CAN do it – they CAN achieve that goal - they CAN meet the challenges and overcome the obstacles. When a goal is met this way there is such a sense of accomplishment.
And sometimes, the drive becomes an overdrive that can damage people’s relationships, health, miss the mark, or worse - mess up another part of the business with greater ramifications. Knowing when to push and knowing when to not do anything and wait or regroup and change the goal altogether, is the place of judgment and wisdom. How often do you need to exercise these muscles? How do you figure out a way forward? When you do, do you make wise decisions or push to regret it?
Reflection Questions
When and where do you need to regroup and strategize on an alternate route to get to the goal or change the goal altogether?
How do you know when you need to read the signs that achieving this goal is just not meant to be? How do you know, and what is the criteria by which you decide?
Are you willing to exercise the courage required to act on that decision, particularly in the face of opposition? What helps with stepping into this courageous decision more fully?
